The Foundation Saint Barbara has been set up in the year 1995. Ever since the Foundation has worked in former war regions to clear land mines, to give humanitarian help to the victims and to recultivate the areas afterwards. The concept contains the components of humanitarian mine clearing as well as the aspect of development aid to regain living space for the local population.
The forecasted change of climate will generate an enormous contribution to the anyway short resources of water so that the living space will change and be reduced. For the agriculture wells must be drilled, the water must be pumped up by solar pumps and by use of alternative energy as for example wind wheels used for simple desalination plants the water has to be made consumable. Dr. Koehler himself drilled 3,000 wells in Ghana.
The sustainability arises by the development of self responsibility in the local structures. The Foundation works as far as possible with local co-workers to fulfill the main target of help for self-help.
